Hotels includes Hotel, Country House Hotel, Small Hotel, Town House Hotel, Metro Hotel. These are given a rating of one to five stars.
Guest accommodation includes guest houses, bed and breakfast, farmhouses, inns and restaurant with rooms. These are rated from one to five diamonds (moving to stars through 2006).
Self-catering accommodation includes Self-Catering, Serviced Apartments, Approved Caravan Holiday Homes. These are given a rating of one to five stars.
Holiday parks, camping and caravan parks are rated one to five stars, based on the quality of service, cleanliness, environment and facilities provided.
Hostels are rated one to five stars, based on facilities, services, cleanliness and accommodation.

Gold and silver awards are given to establishments that exceed the overall quality required for their rating.
Awarded for food distinctly above the standard encountered through most of the restaurant industry. Also look out for Red Star and Diamond Awards for that extra special experience.
The Dining Award, the Warm Welcome Award and the Sparking Diamond Award are all awarded for excellence in specific areas.
Walkers/Cyclists Welcome
The new UK-wide scheme will give walkers and cyclists the confidence that they are booking quality accommodation that meets their particular needs. Simple common criteria for the scheme have been introduced along with several activity specific requirements. For more information visit:

The National Accessible Scheme
Places that display one of the signs below are committed to accessibility. The accommodation has been assessed against demanding criteria as part of the National Accessible Scheme organised by Visit Britain.
Accessibility level one (mobility)
Typically suitable for a person with sufficient mobility to climb a flight of steps but would benefit from fixtures and fittings to aid balance.
Accessibility level two (mobility)
Typically suitable for a person with restricted walking ability and for those that may need to use a wheelchair some of the time.
Accessibility level three (mobility)
Typically suitable for a person who depends on the use of a wheelchair and transfers unaided to and from a wheelchair in a seated position.
Accessibility level four (mobility)
Typically suitable for a person who depends on the use of a wheelchair and transfers to and from the wheelchair in a seated position.They also require personal/mechanical assistance to aid transfer eg carer/hoist. |
